Starting from 2017, Italy is the only country in the world that is operating an Electronic Wine Register, through which producers on the supply chain must register movements and processing of wine products online. Besides the technical limits and delays some companies have encountered, in addition to allowing official inspectors to monitor and verify online individual procedures and movements carried out by all producers present on national territory, the Register provides important data for the wine market. There are almost 15.000 registered producers, of which 16% produce 1.000 or more hectoliters a year. There are about 438.000 registered vats and more than 20 million winemaking operations are recorded annually.

In the first year the electronic wine register has been functioning, it as already provided important results in terms of combating fraud, as the questions on the register allow one to have precise data on individual movements and stocks of companies, but also to monitor the behavior of those most at risk. As of December 31, 2017, stocks amounted to 46.2 million hectoliters in Italian wine cellars, including PDO (49%), PGI (28%), generic (22%) and varietal (1%). Veneto is the leader at 11 million hectoliters, of which more than 6 million PDO, followed by Emilia Romagna (just under 6 million hectoliters) and Tuscany (over 5 million hectoliters).

Among PDO and PGI wines, Prosecco stocks amounted to 2.9 million hectoliters (8.2%), those of Terre Siciliane 1.7 million hectoliters and Tuscany 1.4 million hectoliters, then Veneto (1.35 million hectoliters) and Chianti (1.26 million hectoliters). Continuing, we also find the most prestigious names, such as Chianti Classico (734.715 hectoliters), Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco (643.409 hectoliters), Franciacorta (528.232 hectoliters), Barolo (460.912 hectoliters), Amarone della Valpolicella (408.868 hectoliters) and Brunello di Montalcino (343.754 hectoliters).
