THE ELECTION OF DONALD TRUMP PRESIDENT ELECT OF THE UNITED STATES HAS DIVIDED THE WORLD, BUT NOW THERE WILL BE A WINE PRODUCER, THE FAMILY BUSINESS TRUMP WINERY IN VIRGINIA, AT THE WHITE HOUSE

The election of Donald Trump as president elect of the United States has divided the world. However, there will now be a wine producer and fan in the White House, because the American millionaire and his family, own "Trump Winery", one of the largest wineries in Virginia, counting 315 hectares. That the president elect made famous in the days when he was competing for candidacy of the Republican Party, offering "house wines" at a press conference in Florida.
Who knows whether Trump’s repeatedly proclaimed “first the interests of Americans and then the others”, which sounds very much like neo-protectionism, will be a good omen for countries that export their wine to the US, which today is the world’s leading wine market. Italy is number one in volume and value among foreign producers, and we certainly hope that there will not be a "nationalist" turns to the business sector.

On the other hand, there have been many contacts between the Trump family and Italian wine in the past. For instance, in 2011, at Trump Tower in Chicago, Donald hosted, taking part personally, a tasting of Masi brand Amarone della Valpolicella.

And the very famous and ex wife of the president elect, Ivana Trump, not only had a liaison with Roffredo Lovatelli Gaetani of Aragon in the early 2000s, whose family has been the historical owners of Argiano, one of the most prestigious and oldest wineries of Brunello di Montalcino, but also a long friendship with one of the most important people in the Italian wine world, Gelasius Lovatelli Gaetani of Aragon, who created an ad hoc wine, especially for her in 2000, "Chianti Colli Senesi" labeled "Ivana", and selected the wines (Chardonnay 2006 Planeta 2006 and Nearchus, 2013 Col d'Orcia, ed.) for the wedding of the rich heiress and the Italian playboy Rossano Rudd in 2008.

Looking beyond trivia and wine, there are lots of unknowns regarding terms of trade policy, environment, food and agriculture. Trump has continually declared his passion for junk food, has said he believes that global warming is "a hoax concocted by the Chinese", would like to repeal the Treaty of Paris, and is opposed to labeling foods produced with GMOs. These are all election campaign statements and quips, for now. But, Europe is engaged with the United States in TTIP negotiations, which is worth tens of billions of euros and is definitely complicated, and, one of Italy’s wine and food key partners is the United States. All these statements must be considered very carefully, as the person who uttered them is, in the traditional definition, nothing less than "the most powerful man in the world".
