THE CURTAIN IS UP ON THE 2013 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD LABEL. THE SOUTH KOREAN ARTIST LEE UFAN FOCUSED ON SIMPLICITY, WITH A PURPLE AND RED BRUSHSTROKE OVER THE CHATEAU LOGO

The curtain is up on the label that will decorate Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2013 vintage. Following the Catalan artist Miquel Barcelo, it is now the South Korean Lee Ufan’s turn, whose design has focused on simplicity, with a brush stroke of purple and red above the Chateau logo. The artist commented his choice: “The initially indecisive purple gradually reaches its full richness, just like a fine wine, patiently brought to fulfillment in the secret of the vats”.

This concept is even more appropriate in a year like 2013, which was one of the most difficult in Bordeaux over the last two decades, even though the first tastings have revealed some real gems, despite well below average production.

Lee Ufan was born in a mountain village in South Korea in 1936. He moved to Tokyo and went to the Nihon University when he was twenty years old, where is career as an artist began. He has continued the tradition started in 1924 when a work by Jean Carlu decorated the labels of Baron Philippe de Rothschild wines, and continued to be decorated by even more prestigious artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.
