FROM SOL LEWITT AND DAVID TREMLETT’S CHAPEL OF BAROLO CHAPEL TO MARINA ABROMOVIC, THANKS TO THE CULTURAL PATRONAGE OF CERETTO, THE MOST FAMOUS NAMES IN CONTEMPORARY ART HAVE CHOSEN THE LANGHE FOR INSTALLATIONS AND PERFORMANCES IN THE VINEYARDS

From Sol Lewitt and David Tremlett’s masterpiece, Chapel of Barolo, to the arrival of the world famous artist Marina Abramovic, the "priestess" of performance art, last week in Alba. Thanks to the cultural patronage of the Ceretto family, one of the most famous Italian wine brands, the greatest names of contemporary art have chosen the Langhe as a source of inspiration for their works, for site-specific installations and performances among the vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco, which became the very image of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Chapel of Barolo, surrounded by the Brunate vineyard at La Morra, inaugurated the fair in 1999, then Il Cubo, the artistic cellar at Bricco Rocche Winery (2000) in Castiglione Falletto, L'Acino (2009) and The House of the Artist by Anselm Kiefer (2010) in the Monsorda Bernardina Estate in Alba, Francesco Clemente's Fresco in Alba's Cathedral Square (2007), the Michelin-starred restaurant with chef Enrico Crippa - who dedicated a free menu to Marina Abramovic - and Protecting Everywhere, the artistic gate by Valerio Berruti, at Bricco Rocche (2012), Kiki Smith’s My Happy Dream and Hope in La Piola (2014), and the traditional kitchen in Alba’s winery, involving artists in the creation of works transformed into exclusive dishes that decorate the tables, to the artistic labels decorating the bottles of wine, Ceretto’s project for art has been enriched by a new work: Marina Abramovic was in Alba to present her video installation "Holding the milk" from "The Kitchen, Homage to Saint Therese" in the Church of San Domenico ( until November 12th ), and then related her personal vision of art at the Teatro Sociale.
Marina Abramovic’s new performance was sponsored by the 87th edition of the International White Truffle Fair Alba, the largest autumn event in Piedmont (October 7th - November 26th), “apart from the core business, which is the production of wine, we wish to narrate this project that is very dear to us and that our commitment continue in Contemporary art”, said Roberta Ceretto. The link between art and wine is passion, but I must say since we started down this path our perspective has changed and at the communication level it has served to narrate the cellar in a different way”.
"The Kitchen, Homage to Saint Therese" is an art project Marina Abramovic developed in 2009, consisting of nine photo portraits and three videos, of which "Holding the milk" was shown in Alba.
The videos were filmed in the kitchen of the former La Laboral convent in Gijón, a forgotten monastery, now abandoned, where the nuns once housed orphaned children. The work refers to the life of the mystic Saint Therese of Avila, intertwining memories of the artist's childhood, of her grandmother's kitchen and her stories.
