PIEDMONTESE ENOLOGIST CARLO CORINO PASSED AWAY. HE WAS ONE OF THE PROTAGONISTS OF THE SUCCESS OF SICILIAN WINES

Carlo Corino, the Piedmontese enologist who made Sicilian wine famous, has passed away. A personality who shied away from the clamor and the spotlight of the Italian wine world, Corino was a top level technician in terms of experience and skill. His name will be forever linked to the success of Planeta with whom, in 1989, he became involved in a collaboration that sparked rebirth of Sicilian wine. Working simultaneously at Cantine Settesoli and Planeta, Corino introduced techniques that, at that time, were completely innovative and even unthinkable for a territory that was so behind enologically speaking.
Though he originally started his career in the Piedmont region, after only a short working experience in Langa, Corino decided to expand his horizons by moving abroad, first to Ethiopia and then to Australia. His cosmopolitan experiences have heavily influenced his approach to wine that was based, above all, on open-mindedness and a constant effort to stay updated, “nourished” by the many contacts Corino had created all over the world.
His consulting collaborations are also impressive: from D’Amico and Castel de Paolis, to Barollo, and Frescobaldi, to the most recent collaboration with Cavit. After a long battle with a grave illness, Carlo Corino died last week at his home in Tuscany. He was 68 years old.
